Theme﹕ Games for Change: Healthy Living

In this digital age, digital games have become part of our lives. People are playing mobile games everywhere and all the time. There are video game console in many families, and we use digital games to connect with our friends. We are spending a lot of time on digital games; what if we use games to change our world?

Well designed digital games are benefiting and improving our lives. They help us acquire new knowledge and skills; they help us to see things in a different perspective; they enable us to experience things we couldn’t easily experience in real life. Well designed digital games encourage players to think, to communicate, to exercise, to learn and to be aware of the world and people around us. Designing a game is an equally, if not a more rewarding and enriching experience. It requires imagination, creativity, technological and artistic skills to come up with the best design and best representation to convey your idea to your audience through a game.

Therefore, theme of the 4th Hong Kong Digital Game Development Competition is Games for Change: Healthy Living*. It’s been the forth year of the competition organized by the Hong Kong Digital Game-Based Learning Association. We have been trying to encourage different levels in the society to design and create a digital game that contributes to the world. No matter it’s a minor change to a group or to vanish a global problem, we believe that digital game is one of the best channels to improve our society.

Through the competition, participants have to design and develop a game that can improve people’s health, physically or mentally. The game can be targeted at a specific group of needed people; or to the general public. We hope that gamers, through playing the games designed by the participants, will improve their health in an interactive and enjoyable way. Here are some game topic suggestions. You may consider developing games for:

  • healing autism
  • fighting depression
  • changing bad habits
  • keeping a healthy diet
  • encouraging exercises
  • …or other interesting ideas!

*Games for Change is a movement and community of practice dedicated to using digital games for social change. The movement first emerged as Games for Change at Serious Games’ conference held at New York Academy of Sciences on June 8, 2004. “Games for Change” is also the name for the non-profit organization which is building the field by providing support, visibility, and shared resources to individuals and organizations using digital games for social change.

  • Raise social awareness on how games can make changes to the world
  • Improve knowledge regarding health through the game development
  • Learn how to stay healthy through playing games
  • Nurture new local talents for the Hong Kong creative industry
  • Encourage and promote the use of innovative technology in primary and secondary schools
  • Cultivate students’ awareness of autonomous learning and develop their independent thinking and problem solving skill
  • Improve students logical thinking and organization skill through digital games development
  • Raise students’ learning motivation by applying digital game-based learning in secondary and primary schools
  • Strengthen the interaction among digital game design professionals, educators and every one else in the society to improve the standard in the field

We are accepting mobile games in iOS, Android and Windows App format.

*For primary school participants, if they cannot complete the whole game, they can submit a simple prototype of their game.

**For tertiary participants, they have an option to choose between games or apps category.


Participants can register for the competition and submit their submission online. Each participant/ team is required to submit the following items:

  1. The Playable*

    An installable and playable version in the format for smart phone or tablet (iOS/ Android/ Windows app), the related files and the original file, including the source code, header files, library files, image files, data files or other compiled files, method and/or the command line. If the submitted file is an installation file, digital signature is not required.

  2. The Design Document

    A document including the following information (you may include images):

    • (a) Name of the submission
    • (b) Summary – A paragraph explaining your creative ideas, the intent of your game, game play features and purpose and how it aligns to the 4thHKDGDC theme, etc
    • Instructions
  3. Video (optional for the primary school group)

    A demo video file showcasing your submission. It should include no more than 5 minutes of demonstration

  4. Screenshots

    Each submission can include a maximum of 10 screenshots

*For primary school group participants, they can submit a simple prototype.

  • Each participant can only take part in one of the submissions
  • Each submission can only be submitted once, either individually or through a team
  • Each submission can only be submitted to one of the category groups
  • A team may consist of 2-5 team members (teammates have to be from the same school for primary and secondary school groups)
  • All submissions in the primary school group and secondary school group have to be applied through a teacher
  • There is no limit on the number of submissions submitted by one school
  • All participating individuals/ teams must posses the proper right to use the software/tools for their design and development
  • Copyright of the submitted works belongs to the participants; we reserve the right to use the submitted works for public exhibition
  • The organizer reserves the right to the final decision regarding to the eligibilities of the participants and the results of the competition
